Why Anti-Aging Medicine?
Anti-aging medicine, is, first, evidence-based interventions prior to diagnosis of disease and, second, treatment of the cause of disease, not just its symptoms. What’s more, anti-aging medicine is based on scientific research.
Anti-Aging Medicine versus “Traditional” Medicine
The traditional medical model focuses on diagnosis of disease with the appropriate expectation that earlier diagnosis will improve treatment outcomes and treatment cost. This, for example, is the purpose behind Pap smears, colonoscopies and mammograms. While these are important health maintenance tools, none of them aim to prevent cancer. They just pick it up earlier.
If disease has occurred, the traditional medical model offers treatment for symptoms, and at best “disease modification” (such as medications for auto-immune disease) or radical cures with serious side effects (such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for cancer). Such approaches are important and often lifesaving. Anti-aging medicine goes steps beyond by offering multi-faceted treatment of the cause of disease.
Anti-aging medicine is health promotion and disease prevention, reversal of the degenerative process of aging and optimization of health at any age and under any condition. As such, it does not operate within the health insurance system, which is rooted in the traditional medical model. In the long run, anti-aging medicine saves money for each individual and, one patient at a time, for our communities and society at large.
Our traditional medical model has failed. We have an epidemic of obesity among adults and children alike. Traditional diseases of aging such as diabetes have reached catastrophic proportions among increasingly younger populations.
Our children are the first generation that appears to be doomed with a lower life expectancy than their parents. Auto-immune disease is rampant and steadily growing each year. The rates of cancer, ADD and autism are increasing at an alarming rate. More than 50% of the population above age 85 has Alzheimer’s disease. For any one of these conditions, on a financial level alone, the long-term cost to each individual, their families and their communities are staggering. The associated suffering and emotional costs are immeasurable. Anti-aging medicine is the ultimate public health tool. Anti-aging medicine is the future of medicine, now!
Dr. Worwag is convinced that in the future the health insurance system will acknowledge this new medical specialty and incorporate it into its own system.
